Competition – It’s Your Story!

Write your story and get your book published by Access2books

An invitation to become a budding writer! We are excited to launch this competition to write an accessible children’s picture story book. We are asking parents or guardians to team up with their child (who is the reason for their interest in Through Scarlett’s Eyes) to help them write a story. The book can be up to 400 words, should be funny and should include your child in the story! Entrants will also need to supply a front cover design which illustrates the main characters and story line.

There are three age categories for children (with the help of their adult) to enter in to:
0 to 6 years, 7 to 12 years and 13 to 17 years.

One winner will be selected from each age category, the prizes are as follows:

0 to 6 years
£25 John Lewis Vouchers (donated by John Lewis Milton Keynes)
A story book of their choice from the Access2books catalogue

7 to 12 years
£25 John Lewis Vouchers (donated by John Lewis Milton Keynes)
A story book of their choice from the Access2books catalogue

12 to 17 years
£25 John Lewis Vouchers (donated by John Lewis Milton Keynes)
A story book of their choice from the Access2books catalogue

From the three winners one overall winner will be selected who will also win a copy of their story book published by Access2books in dual format giant print with braille and clear contrasting illustrations. A copy of the book will also be held by the British Library in London for everyone to enjoy!


The judging panel

We are thrilled to announce a fantastic panel of judges for you all to impress:

Sue Hendra 
Sue Hendra is a children’s story book author who has worked on over 70 titles including the well-loved ‘Barry the Fish with Fingers’, ‘Norman the Slug with the Silly Shell’ and ‘Supertato’.

Tim O’Sullivan
Tim O’Sullivan is Creative Director at Karrot Animation where he is Series Director and Script Editor of BAFTA award winning series for CBeebies Sarah and Duck.

Eileen Finch
Eileen Finch is Founder and Director of Access2books publishing company of children’s picture story books in accessible formats.

Charlotte Mellor
Charlotte Mellor is an employee of VICTA and representative of Through Scarlet’s Eyes.

How to enter

By Email

– Please email your story and any accompanying images to print@access2books.org.

– Please make sure the email is sent by a responsible parent or guardian (age 18+) who by entering is agreeing to the terms and conditions on behalf of their child.

– Please address the email subject as ‘It’s your story competition entry from (+your name)’

– Please ensure you include the following information in your email:

1. Names of authors and illustrators, plus the age of your child.

2. Title of your story

3. The category you belong to: 4 to 9 years or 10 to 15 years.

4. Your contact details including full name, telephone/mobile number, email address and postal address.

– Please note, by entering the competition you agree to the terms and conditions detailed below.

Terms and Conditions

By entering the competition you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

1. THE COMPETITION is only open to readers and contributors of the ‘Through Scarlett’s Eyes’ website and is specifically for children who are blind or partially sighted. The competition is only open to permanent residents of the United Kingdom.

2. WORKING TOGETHER You may work with your child or they can work alone. Two children may work together on one book.

3. THE STORY Entrants should write an original piece which should not exceed 400 words.

4. WINNER’S BOOK The overall winner will work with Access2books to provide illustrations for the final publication.

5. COPYRIGHT remains with the author and illustrator of the story.

6. RELATIVES of judges may not enter. Employees or relatives of employees of Access2books, Through Scarlett’s Eyes or VICTA may not enter.

7. PERMISSION The entrant or responsible adult entering on behalf of the entrant gives permission and gives authorisation on behalf of the author and illustrator for the book to be edited, transcribed, copied, published and distributed with no charge to Access2books.

8. LATE ENTRIES Stories arriving after 8 January 2016 will not be entered into the competition.

9. WINNERS The judges’ decision is final.

10. PROMOTION Winners entries and names may be used, with permission, for promotional use, for example on the Through Scarlett’s Eyes and Acccess2books websites and social media.

11. ROYALTY Royalty’s of 4% will be payable for any sales of the published book.
