In the United Kingdom, there is an increasing risk to poor eye health among children, as 1 in 5 kids have an undetected vision problem. What’s even more alarming is that 25% of parents said their children never had any form of an eye exam, and 8% couldn’t even recall the last time their children had one.
Despite these distressing figures, the UK National Screening Committee, a government body responsible for performing the reviewing the childhood vision screening, advises that eye tests should only be conducted if kids are having vision problems in school or suffering from a chronic illness.
With 70% of schools without regular eye screening, Chief Executive of the Association of Optometrists, Bob Hughes, considers such act as “an absolute public health disgrace” because there are vision problems that can be corrected.
Further, children are missing out on having a good education just because they can’t see. In extreme cases, some even go blind due to undetected refractive problems, wherein 50% of sight loss incidences could have been avoided only if these have been spotted early on.
With various treatments available nowadays, there’s no excuse for parents like you to neglect your child’s eye health. As soon as vision problems are detected, and while your kids are still developing their visual system, you have all the means to prevent everything from worsening.
