My delightful toddler has blossomed into a wonderful young girl, 4 years old on Saturday the 14th June. As mentioned in previous blogs Scarlett choice of toys does not fall into the ‘run of the mill’ and there is a element of coaching involved in promoting play. So I combined Scarlett’s loves of music and vibration to create the of m ultimate present bonaza!
Due to her extensive experimenting with instruments Scarlett has started to enjoy real-life instruments, the sound, quality and pitch makes for an auditory delight. So firstly I purchased her some high-hat cymbals, tantalizing her love of sound, vibration and introducing a ’cause and effect’ mechanism.
As an attempt to prevent her from banging on a variety of objects from across the globe, I have been providing Scarlett a drum to create a banging outlet. Due to experimentation with LOTS of drums the Irish Celtic Bodhran Drum has become a regular favourite so I invested in one of her very own to offer that beating release.
Next onto Scarlett’s affinity with all things that vibrate. There are lots of sensory toy outlets which offer a variety of vibrating toys. Anything from hair brushes to body massagers. All have been a hit! Vibrating pillow, bug massager, atomic massager, vibrating snake.
I am always thinking about creative ways to promote speech and language, and Scarlett really enjoys listening to recordings of herself back so I thought a repeating toy would be a great way to get instant feedback from something she said. Welcoming Richie the Repeating Rabbit! He has been great at encouraging Scarlett to say words she wants to hear back and her brother is in love with it too!
I purchased most of Scarlett’s toys from ebay or http://www.specialneedstoys.com/uk/, and it just goes to show that although she isn’t playing with barbies or dollies she can still have a whole lot of fun.
